9th Edition of Black's Law Dictionary

EAGAN, Minn., June 24, 2009 – The time-tested tradition and reliability of Black's Law Dictionary is enhanced with its 9th edition, now available from West.

Edited by Bryan A. Garner, the 9th edition of Black's contains more than 45,000 terms, including 2,500 new entries for terms such as click fraud, ecoterrorism, friendly subpoena, happy-slapping, honor crime, and super precedent.

"It is always interesting to watch the legal vocabulary develop, and the 9th edition of Black's Law Dictionary has some fascinating new terminology in it as a result," said Garner. "There are all sorts of different doctrines represented from different fields of law. For example, intellectual property is a very active field right now, with a lot of writing going on there."

In addition to the new terms, more than 15,000 entries in the 9th edition now cite the date when they were first used in English-language contexts, especially in judicial opinions.

More than 200 lawyers, legal scholars and judges around the world helped Garner review and edit the terms.

"The Black's Law Dictionary team is so large because we strive to make it as accurate, scholarly and reliable as it can be," Garner said. "Because of the research and revisions, Black's is the legal dictionary of record and is the most cited in courts from the United States Supreme Court on down. No other law book does what Black's does."
