Can I create PeopleMap report if I only have the person's license plate number?

Q: I want to create a Westlaw PeopleMap report on someone who was involved in a collision with my client in Illinois. The problem? The only information I was able to get from a witness was the vehicle's license plate number—something I can't type in the PeopleMap search template! Now what?

A: Here's a quick and easy option: First, access the Motor Vehicle Records-Combined database (DMV-ALL) (if you prefer, you can click Motor Vehicle Records under Assets on the tabbed Public Records page) and run a search for the license plate number. If you retrieve several records, you might be able to rule out some records by factors such as the vehicle make, model, or color or the issuing state.

Next, while viewing the motor vehicle record of a likely match, select a name from the Create a People Map Report for drop-down list on the Links tab and click Go. A PeopleMap display is created for you. There's no need to run a second search!
